If you accept a scholarship from a college but then decide you want to go to another college, are you allowed to do that? They cant make you go to that school right?

They can’t force you to go to the school, but you will almost definitely have to forgo the scholarship if it came directly from the school. There are a few things that need to be cleared up:

-Did the school itself offer you the scholarship, or was it from an independent source? If the former is true, you will not be able to use the scholarship for a different school. If it was from another source, you can probably switch it – contact the scholarship provider.

-Did you apply under an early decision/early action program? Depending on the school, early decision/early action can be a contract that you will attend the school unless there are dire circumstances. Even then they can never physically force you to go to the school, but you may find it difficult to get into another school – the school you apply for under a binding contract may threaten legal action against any other school that you enroll in.

-What specifically do you mean by a scholarship? If the school gave you a merit-based scholarship, you may or may not be eligible for something similar at another school. If the school gave you a financial aid award letter listing government sources for funding your education, you will probably be eligible for those at any other school. If the school gave you a scholarship based on something else – like, you are of a certain ethnicity, or your parent has a certain job – a few schools have scholarship programs for these things, you’d have to check out whether the school you now want to go to offers them as well.

In short though, this question can’t be answered well unless you list the school that gave you the scholarship, the school that you now want to attend, and the type of scholarship.
